Born in 1982 in New Orleans, LA and raised in Austin, TX, Daniel’s childhood was awash with music. With a father who both played guitar and piano and was a scholar of New Orleans music [check out the new edition of his book Up From the Cradle of Jazz], Daniel’s burgeoning musical abilities were always generously supported. His father would often let Daniel come and hang out at the recording studio where he produced some of Austin’s most notable Blues artists.

At age 12 Daniel began studying classical trombone and electric bass.  With the encouragement of his middle school band director, Mark Gurgel, Daniel began playing in jazz band where he learned the fundamentals of improvisation, groove and jazz theory. In high school Daniel started studying the acoustic bass with Art Langston. Soon Daniel was accompanying many of Austin’s jazz musicians and exploring new musical territories with his peers.

Deciding to pursue music as a career, Daniel began studying at the world-renowned University of North Texas in 2001. There, Daniel studied bass under the great Lynn Seaton who is a continual source of inspiration and support.
